How to Vent Parapet Walls with Capstones

WickRight Capstone Vented Drip Edge, Vented Receiver Clip and Membrane prevent moisture intrusion and provides venting AND flashing to redirect moisture away from masonry.

Membrane stats:

  • Water vapor rises through membrane - Perm rating 108
  • Water molecules are too big to pass through the membrane
  • Membrane holds 8 oz water 9.5 hrs with less than ≤ .040 grams seepage

Drip Edge and Receiver Clip stats:

  • Allows 7.3 cfm of fresh air to pass over the parapet with an 18 mph wind, drying out existing moisture intrusion
  • Air movement produces lift force of 7.87 lbs that pulls moisture vapor out of the wall

How to Prevent Moisture Intrusion & Vent Parapet Walls with Capstones

WickRight parapet products are a combination of venting and flashing, plus our Membrane which protects AND vents.

  • Water vapor rises through membrane - Perm rating 108
  • Water molecules are to big to pass through membrane and sits on surface for 9.5 hrs with only .040 grams of seepage.
  • Capstone and Clip Coping devices allow up to 7.3 cubic feet per minute of fresh air per linear foot to continuously pass over the parapet with an 18 mph wind
  • Air movement produces continuous lift force of XYZ per minute which pulls moisture up and out of the wall. Multiple by the average building perimeter of 180' - for a REAL drying effect and a smell-free building.

How to Vent Parapet Walls with Metal Copings

Installing WickRight Metal Coping Vent under metal copings with 4" or longer legs provides moisture intrusion prevention AND ventilation. Installing membrane with Metal Coping Vent  is optional, but recommended in areas where driving rains are common. Do not install with a wood nailer - the nailer blocks moisture vapor release and isn't necessary when proper fasteners are used. For Miami Dade code areas, call to discuss fastener options.

Metal copings are your best bet for a dry parapet - but if the parapet is already wet, ditch the lumber nailer and install our Coping VRS under a new metal coping with no less than 4" legs on both sides. Our Membrane is optional under metal copings, but is an added layer of protection if a caulk seam fails.

How Masonry Sealants prevent leaks in split face block and other masonry walls

We believe that all CMU, especially split face block, should be sealed to prevent moisture intrusion. All hard mortar types should also be sealed.


WickRight's installation team prefers to use siloxane-based sealants.  Some manufacturer offer a warranty on sealants if it is installed to the manufacturer's specs on a qualifying building.


We do not recommend installing water-based, "environmentally friendly" sealants. They do not work as well nor last as long as siloxane-based sealants. 

Do masonry sealants work on Renaissance Stone?

Can Cast Concrete, also called Renaissance Stone, be sealed? It depends on who you ask. We say, not well enough to prevent moisture intrusion.
How we deal with cast concrete and Renaissance stone details....

If a detail ISN'T structural – We remove it, flash behind it to divert water to the exterior of the building and away from other "stone", reinstall it AND attempt to seal it.
If a detail IS structural – We attempt to seal it, then design flashings, cornices or awnings to divert rain water from hitting it or sitting on it.
